The tale of the flapping bat

talking to the civet cat:

You, my friend, you over there!

Could we both not make a pair

up in the baliti tree?

It'd be grand, for you and me!

Answered back the civet cat

to the strange inviting bat:

You, my friend, you high up there!

You are living, as I see,

up in the baliti tree,

at night and during the day.

This is what I mean to say:

I am staying here behind.

I am different from your kind!

The bat, after coming back,

found the cat who was now dead

in the water of the stream.

Queried the bat, asking him:

You, my friend, you over there!

Why is it that you are dead

on the sandy riverbed,

the side of the flowing stream?

Maybe hacked down by a blade

or shot by an arrowshaft,

by a swift and piercing dart?

Tell me please, I'd like to know.

Answered back the civet cat:

You, my friend, you high up there!

It is true that I am dead

on the sandy riverbed,

the side of the flowing stream.

But not hacked down by a blade,

not shot by an arrowshaft

or a swift and piercing dart.

The reason that I am dead

is because I took a bath

at the water in the West,

when the moon was coming up.

I was already too old!

That is why I went away!
